The methods of Vedic Mathematics are very easy and straightforward. So simple in fact, that you may want to do most of the calculations in your head- mentally. You are encouraged to do this because the Vedic system is a system of mental mathematics. But you should also enjoy the mathematics, so you should not struggle to do everything in your head. Feel free to use pencil and paper if you like.
At the beginning of this book you will see a list of Sutras (or formulae) and a list of Sub-Sutras (sub-formulae) which will be a great help in your mathematics work. The word "Sutra" means "thread", and you will find that these formulae link up many areas of mathematics. In fact they describe the way your mind works- they tell you how to go about answering questions. You will be introduced to these Sutras one by one (you do not have to learn them) and you will find they are written in italics where they are used in the book.
